Mallorca In the Winter

November 5, 2019 | Blog

Winter in Mallorca has much to offer. For one thing, it’s the quiet season on the island, with a lot more elbow room at major recreational and historical attractions and an easier time getting into restaurants and clubs. The weather, meanwhile, is worlds away from the bone-chilling temperatures and heapfuls of snow and ice many other parts of the Northern Hemisphere contend with: Our Mediterranean paradise offers a sunny, balmy wintertime that offers plenty of escape from those harsh conditions. You won’t find a better spot for soaking up the winter fun (and sun) on Mallorca than a Hoposa hotel or vacation apartment!

The Charms of a Mallorcan Winter

Midwinter temperatures in Mallorca are often in the 50s or even low 60s (Fahrenheit), and there’s lots and lots of rich sunshine to boot. It may not always be straight-up sunbathing weather, but it’s certainly a comparatively warm oasis where you can take advantage of outdoor activities and sightseeing in comfort.

Indeed, Mallorca’s known around the world as an elite year-round destination for athletic training. This is a great time of year to take to Mallorca’s cycling routes, for example. A number of our Hoposa properties are particularly well set up for cycling on account of their on-site bike storage and repair shops, and our SportHotel Villanconcha ranks among the best island accommodations for athletes in general given the training facilities and services.

Hikers will find quieter trails and often-perfect crisp, sunny weather for soaking up Mallorca’s natural beauty firsthand, from the bird-rich estuary of La Gola Nature Park to the stunning limestone high country of the Serra de Tramontana.

While up in those craggy mountains, maybe you’ll luck out with the sight of some of the rare snow that graces our island—typically on those mountaintops (where snow was historically collected by gatherers known as nevaters and packed down in insulated pits to create ice) and only rarely in the lowlands. The more common “snow” of Mallorca is the blooming of the island’s many almond trees, which kicks off in late winter and creates one of Mallorca’s most mesmerizing photo ops.

Throw in a slew of holiday markets and celebrations, plus other winter events such as the Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastia festivals, the Son Servera Fair of Blooming Almonds (Fira de la Flor d’Ametler), and the Mallorcan Carnival, and you’ll find plenty going on all season long.

Other Winter Activities on Mallorca

Winter is also a great season to take in the pleasures of Mallorcan wine, whether you’re following an official itinerary such as the Wine Route for the Binissalem DO—which includes some 14 awesome wineries—or scheming up your own winery-hopping adventure. The same goes for sampling Mallorcan cuisine: We already mentioned how much easier it is to patronize some of the island’s best-known and best-loved eateries in these quieter months of wintertime. The weather’s also often very conducive to taking to one of Mallorca’s numerous golf courses—and, here again, you’re liable to enjoy quite a bit more elbow room than during the summer crunch. Even if things are on the chilly or dank side, you can always slip into one of Mallorca’s many museums for a fascinating cultural experience. Options include the Centro Cultural Andratx (CCA) contemporary art museum, Palma’s Es Baluard Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art and Museum of Spanish Contemporary Art, the Robert Graves Museum in Deia, the Chopin Museum in Valldemossa, and the Royal Palace La Almudaina in Palma. (Don’t forget the Palma Aquarium, either!) If you’re staying with us at a Hoposa hotel or vacation apartment for Christmas, meanwhile, you might consider taking part in another cherished Mallorcan tradition: the Midnight Mass at Palma’s resplendent La Seu cathedral.

Mallorca is a beautiful place in the winter!
