Best Resort Near Pollenca Wine Fair

April 3, 2019 | Blog

If you count yourself a fan of the grape, we urge you to come stay with us at a Hoposa hotel or vacation apartment here on the vino-loving island of Mallorca for this spring’s annual Pollenca Wine Fair!

The event, which musters the world-class creations of dozens of Mallorcan wineries as well as some winemakers from elsewhere in the Balearic archipelago, is an absolutely fantastic (and absolutely fun) way to survey regional wine. A luxury Hoposa home base in Puerto Pollensa puts you just minutes from the action!

The 2019 Pollenca Wine Fair

This year’s Pollenca Wine Fair takes place Saturday, May 11th and Sunday, May 12th at the Convent of Santo Domingo in Pollenca’s Old Town. The festival is put on each year by the Pollenca Artisan Wine Association (l’Associació Vi Primitiu de Pollenca), which formed in 1999 and launched its first Wine Fair five years later.

Wine tastings with associated nibbles (such as Balearic cheese) and live music will be going down Saturday from 10 AM to 8:30 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM. Besides sampling to your heart’s content, you’ll of course have the option of purchasing some of these fabulous Balearic Islands wines by the bottle or the case.

Meanwhile you’ll find special menus on offer at Pollenca’s eateries to put the icing on the cake of the Wine Fair experience.

Wine in Mallorca

Mallorca has long been associated with viticulture: It has been since the days of the Romans. Though the industry has had its ups and downs—not least during a plague of the grapevine-devastating phylloxera insect in the late 1800s—it’s absolutely booming these days, and some of the island’s wineries can trace their roots back centuries.

Major Mallorcan winemaking regions include the Pla I Llevant and Binissalem areas as well as the Serra de Tramuntana foothills. Native grapes include Manto Negro, Monstrell (Mourvedre), and Callet.

With an oenophilic base camp at a Hoposa hotel or vacation apartment, you’re beautifully poised to explore Mallorcan wine: at events such as the Pollenca Wine Fair, sure, but also all year round by vineyard-hopping on your own or taking a guided tour, including (perhaps) a merry ride aboard the Mallorca Wine Express Train. The way we look at it, bringing home some local wine with you is like bottling up a Mallorcan vacation: Just pop the cork to relive a bit of the Balearic (and the Hoposa) magic whenever you need it!
