Things to Do for Christmas on Mallorca, Spain
Dezember 13, 2018 | Blog
Though we are closed until March, our island is full of fun holiday activities! Why not declare this Christmas as something truly special, and come spend it amid Mediterranean sunshine on Mallorca?
You’ll have front-row seats to the island’s exuberant celebrations of the yuletide season. Here are some of the holiday goings-on you can enjoy on Mallorca where you’ll certainly enjoy a Christmas to remember in the Balearics!
Christmas Fairs & Markets
You’ll find holiday markets in cities, towns, and villages across Mallorca this time of year. That includes the well-attended Christmas Fair in Palma, which runs December 7th through January 6th, as well as the city’s Plaza Mayor (November 21st through January 6th) and Pueblo Español (December 5th through December 9th) Christmas markets, plus similar seasonal marketplaces in other Mallorcan communities such as Puerto Portals and Alaró.
Mallorca’s not exactly a frozen wonderland in wintertime (aside from the snows that periodically dust the high country of the Serra de Tramuntana), but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your ice-skating on during a holiday getaway here. Port Adriano turns its main square into a fantastic skating rink and “ice theme park” beginning December 21st, while both Palma and Puerto Portals also offer their own rinks.
As we just mentioned, snow does typically fall on the Serra de Tramuntana mountaintops at least periodically during the Mallorcan winter, so if you want a taste of the white stuff during a Christmastime getaway on the island consider heading upslope! (For more on Mallorcan snow—including the historical snow-collecting tradition of the Serra de Tramuntana—check out this previous Hoposa blogpost.)
Palma Christmas Lights
By some counts, Palma’s annual display of Christmas lights this year makes the Mallorcan capital the Spanish city with the most extensive holiday lights. They’re already blazing away, and stay blazing through January 7th.
A Christmas Carol at the Palma Auditorium
For many people, Charles Dickens’ inspiring tale of cranky and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s paranormally inspired embrace of the Christmas spirit is a fundamental fixture of the holiday. You’ll have it to experience during your December getaway in Mallorca, too—from the Ghost of Christmas Past to the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come—courtesy of the Palma Auditorium’s production of A Christmas Carol from December 14th to 16th.
Christmas Magic on Mallorca
From traditional holiday markets and cheerfully lit-up streets to Scrooge’s fateful Christmas Eve overnight, dive deep into Mallorca’s yuletide merriment with a luxury Mallorca vacation this December.
