Mallorca Ironman – September 24, 2016

September 12, 2016 | Blog Things to Do

Sure, there aren’t many better corners of the world than Mallorca for kicking back and relaxing: the caress of a Mediterranean breeze, the sunshine-warmed sand between your toes—you already know this.

But did you know Mallorca’s also the headquarters for one of the most popular triathlons in Europe? The Thomas Cook IRONMAN Mallorca is right around the corner, and one of the absolute highlights of the Mallorcan sporting year—whether you’re one of the iron-willed competitors or simply an awed spectator.

The action goes down in the stunning seaside city of Alcudia (just south of Puerto Pollensa) on September 24th. Taking in the race from the sidelines makes for an unforgettable day on one on of the most fabled islands anywhere!

IRONMAN Mallorca Basics

IRONMAN Mallorca consists of three legs: a 3.86-kilometer (2.4-mile) swim at the start, then a 180.25-km (112-mi) bike ride, and, last but not least, a marathon—a 42.2-km (26.22-mi) run. Yikes: We’re out of breath just writing that sentence down.

And IRONMAN courses don’t come much prettier than Mallorca’s. The athletes will take to the lovely waters of the Bay of Alcudia to kick things off. The bike ride makes quite the impressive circuit that includes the mountain roads of the northeastern Serra de Tramuntana as well as our Hoposa home base of Puerto Pollensa. And, finally, the culminating marathon sees runners weaving through the old streets of the Alcudia port in their race to the finish line.

IRONMAN Mallorca’s among the qualifying races for the IRONMAN World Championship held in Hawaii, which this year falls on October 8.

Incidentally, Alcudia’s also the hub for another IRONMAN competition, IRONMAN 70.3, the number indicating its reduced “Half IRONMAN” mileage.

Take in the Drama

Hey, nothing’s stopping you from registering for IRONMAN Mallorca. If you’re eager to test yourself against Mediterranean brine, Tramuntana grades, and a whole gaggle of competitors, go for it!

For most of us, though, IRONMAN Mallorca is a spectator sport. And a Hoposa hotel or apartment gives you awesome access to the September 24 fun: Alcudia’s a short journey away—nothing like nabbing a spot near that finish line—and meanwhile, as we mentioned earlier, the bicycle race threads through Puerto Pollensa itself.

Even if you’re not quite ready for the full-on IRONMAN challenge, maybe watching the race’ll inspire you to take a leisurely bicycle ride through the heavenly Mallorcan countryside, make a foot safari through one of the island’s historic villages, or admire the Mediterranean surf from a beachfront cabana. Now if only there was a triathlon for tasting wine, feasting on tapas, and napping by the seashore…
