Luxury Lodging for Day of the Balearics

Februar 18, 2019 | Blog Things to Do

An important holiday approaches here on Mallorca: the Day of the Balearic Islands. This is a yearly commemoration of the signing of the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands, which happened on March 1st, 1983. If you find yourself staying with us here at Hoposa Hotels that weekend, you’re likely to enjoy a slew of cultural experiences—among them great food, drink, and music—as well as plenty of regional pride on display!

The Day of the Balearic Islands

This year’s Day of the Balearic Islands falls on Friday, March 1st, though the associated celebration tends to extend to the weekend. On the day itself, in fact, you’ll find many businesses closed in observance.

But many Mallorcan towns and villages will be marking the extended Day of the Balearic Islands occasion with craft and food markets, musical performances, and other revelry. With a Hoposa guestroom or vacation apartment as your home base, you’ll be perfectly situated to sample the festivities!

The Balearics

To put the Day of the Balearic Islands in context, it’s helpful to know a little about this Mediterranean archipelago of ours and its status within Spain. Besides Mallorca, the Balearics include Ibiza, Minorca, and Formentera, as well as such smaller isles as Cabrera and Dragonera. At roughly 623 square miles and about 860,000 residents, Mallorca is by a fair margin the largest of the Balearic Islands both in terms of area and population.

The 1983 Statute of Autonomy gave the Balearics the category of (surprise) an autonomous community within Spain. There are nearly 20 such regions in the country; others include Andalusia, Catalonia, Castile and León, Extremadura, and the Basque Autonomous Community, not to mention the comparatively faraway Canary Islands. These autonomous communities provide a significant level of self-governance to Spain’s different nationalities and geographic sub regions, part of the fundamental framework of the country’s unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy.
