Cycling in Mallorca
January 20, 2021 | Blog
From town circuits and pleasant countryside jaunts to coast-hugging splendor and the challenges and wonders of the great Serra de Tramuntana range, Mallorcan cycling holds its own with any in the world. Lovely weather of year-round balminess, diverse and downright magical scenery, and the opportunity to stop for world-class eats and drinks along the way make the biggest of the Balearic Islands an incredible place to ride—all the more so given the rich cycling resources available, which reflects the popularity of Mallorca among professional bike-racing athletes for both training and competition.
Here at Hoposa, our pitch-perfect Mallorcan hotels and vacation apartments in Puerto Pollensa, Deia, and Cala San Vicente provide unbeatable springboards for experiencing just how incredible Mediterranean cycling on our island can be. Let’s run through some highly recommended cycling routes—and highlight, too, perhaps the best of all Mallorcan accommodations for amateur and pro cyclists alike!
Cycling Routes in Mallorca: From Coastline to Mountaintop
As a visitor to Mallorca, you’re truly spoiled for choices when it comes to world-class cycling routes. There are multiple choices for every skill level and every ambition, whether you’d like an easy, laidback (and mostly flat) sightseeing pedal or a demanding, long-distance adventure with a whole lot of climbing.
Our Hoposa properties position you auspiciously for taking advantage of some of the most celebrated cycling loops in Mallorca, including the 112-kilometer journey to Selva, Inca, and Pollensa out of Puerto Pollensa and the 110-kilometer trek from Deia to the Mallorcan capital of Palma.
An absolute must-try for any devoted cyclist is the roughly 20-kilometer journey from Puerto Pollensa to Cap de Formentor, the peninsula forming the far northeastern extremity of Mallorca and host to some of the island’s most jaw-dropping scenery. Climb out of the port and admire the view from Mirador de Sa Creueta of the El Colomer sea stack, then head onward to the mountainous spine of the peninsula, dipping down to splendid Formentor Beach and marking as a turnaround point the famous lighthouse at the “Cap.”
Another stunner is the ride of about 25 kilometers between Deia and Port de Soller, which takes in the two postcard-perfect harbors bookending the journey as well as the dreamy, cove-tucked shingle beach of Cala Deia.
Cyclists touring between Puerto Pollensa and Andratx enjoy what’s been called one of the most beautiful bike rides anywhere on Earth—and test their mettle against the infamous but amazing Sa Calobra hairpin climb on the hard grades of the Serra de Tramuntana. This route can include a splendid stop in Port de Valldemossa.
