World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day is an initiative launched back in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. “Its purpose,” the World Tourism Organization’s website explains, “is to foster awareness among the global community of tourism’s social, cultural, political, and economic value and the contribution the sector can make in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.”
In other words, World Tourism Day isn’t some vague, crass marketing gimmick, but rather an invitation to reflect on the potential for tourism to spur economic development, cultural pride, environmental consciousness, and other positive effects around the globe.
Why September 27th? That was the day in 1970 when the UN World Tourism Organization adopted its foundational statutes. The organization, based in Madrid, encompasses nearly 160 countries and six territories, with better than 500 affiliate members that include various tourism bodies, NGOs, commercial representatives, and other tourism-related outfits.
This Year’s World Tourism Day Host City & Theme
While World Tourism Day observances go on all around the world, the event has a different official host city each year. The 2019 host is New Delhi, the capital of India and among the most ancient cities on the planet.
The theme for World Tourism Day 2019, meanwhile, is Tourism & Jobs: A Better Future for All.
